  • Peace at the Expense of Truth

I stumbled across this verse and thought it fit me pretty well. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it so please give me your thoughts. Christians, Atheists, and anyone in between are welcome.

Psalm 120:7  I am for peace: but when I speak, they are for war.

         What do you think?

I think this verse is especially true for Xanga.  I am a Christian and I hate conflict but it seems like people are eager to hate me and criticize me for my beliefs when they find out that I am a Christ follower.  There are haters out there for every race, religion, and creed I suppose.

I think it means when you day something, but you mean it for good. And people take that same thing you said and make it into something bad.

dont know how to explain it,understand?

    what do u think??

Jesus said He did not come to bring peace, so I think any time you really represent His message, there will be conflict.

Peace at the expense of truth is anathema.  But when you speak truth, you will be hated for it.

@SirNickDon - wow I think I'll use some of that for a new title for this post if you don't mind.

@Simbathe2nd - Yeah, absolutely.  I'm certain I've heard it, or something close to it, elsewhere.

@MisFishie - I take it as that we are peaceful people, yet when we speak the truth, we are hated for it. So even though we don't want war, what we have to say, although it's the truth, will most likely cause one.

hmm, i'd like to read it in context.

Reminds me of one of my favorite bands: Disciple.

I’m not afraid of loving my enemies
    Turning the other cheek
Blessing those that would curse me
I honestly want peace with you
But when you come against my country
When you come against my family
You try to destroy my people
    I can’t just stand by
There’s no way that I can stand by
This time, I will not stand by
I am coming, and if I come, then pain is coming with me
I’m coming, and pain will be with me

Actually I can relate to that.  : )  Lately our family has been running into some heated responses with friends who are pushing a rather unhealthy allegience to some new pet doctrines sweeping the churches.  It's amazing.

If the "I" is referring to God, then we see why people would be at war with God. We can also see this in the representatives of God i.e. the prophets, kings (like David or Solomon), and especially Christ when they speak to the people about who God is, what he demands, etc. Keep in mind that, in the New Testament, Christ is not promoting peace at all. In fact He promotes division among men (I believe he talks about this in matthew or mark... cant remember which). Christianity is a very serious matter and is in fact a matter of life or death, or an either/or proposition.

But getting back to the passage at hand; depending on who the "I" is, it could be that God will ultimately bring about peace, but before this He must deal with the insolence of his creation and their stubbornness to accept Him. Just a thought.
