  • The Nobel Peace Prize Joke

The nobel peace prize is great in theory. To award someone for their work to make the world a more peaceful and unified place is a fantastic idea. Wouldn't it be great if the people of the world would strive, not only to win an award, but to make peace in the corner of the globe that they inhabit?

Unfortunately, the nobel peace prize has been made something of a joke in the past years. It, like many other things, has been reduced to a politically correct game, where the winner is the one who needs a boost from the left, so as to gain favor with the world. For example, let's take a few of the winners.

In 1994 the esteemed peace prize was awarded to Yasser Arafat, Chairman of the PLO; Shimon Peres, foreign minister of Israel; and Yitzhak Rabin, Prime minister of Israel. These three men have obviously done a great job at working toward peace since Israel and Palestine are in such good favor with each other. Aside from that Yasser Arafat is a known terrorist, revered by his people and branded a terrorist by the Israelis and most of America for his attacks on Israeli civilians in his quest for "peace."

In 2007 it was awarded to Albert Gore for his work to inform the world about climate change and how we can counteract such effects. Unfortunately all of Al's information wasn't correct and it was later discovered that a lot of it was made up. This led to England, ruling that An Inconvenient Truth could be shown in schools, but only if it was accompanied by guidance giving the other side. LINK Obviously Al Gore should have done a bit more homework before accepting the esteemed prize.

In 2009 our beloved President Barack Obama was voted the winner of the prize, although He was actually nominated sometime before Febuary 1...two weeks after his inauguration. A bit early? Of course not, he was known to be our messiah long before he was even our President so why not win a peace prize before he's actually done anything peaceful? Why wouldn't someone like Ronald Reagan receive an award like that? He did far more than any of the above mentioned candidates, and he didn't even get a notable mention from the Nobel Committee, yet Obama received the nomination and ultimately the award TWO WEEKS after he was in office!?

These are just a few examples of why the Nobel Peace Prize is just another tool to promote a political agenda. It seems everything is being turned into a politically correct, popularity contest. Politicians and government seem to care less and less about what really matters, like actual world peace, or actually helping a good cause, or actually feeding a starving orphan, and more about their own popularity and agenda. It is up to us, the people of the world, to stop caring about the government and the awards, and really get out there and get our hands dirty, working toward a common goal. Lets forget about political persuasions, agendas, and differences, and band together to make a better place of this world we live in.

I was wondering when someone was going to post a put down on the peace prize. I figured it was eminent the moment I read that the awarded it to the president.

I'm rather shocked that it took me till this afternoon to find such a post. (But then I only spend a few minutes at a time on xanga and have read maybe 20 posts all day. there are likely a lot more out there.)

  • Simbathe2nd

@nidan - What are your thoughts on it? I'm not saying no not ever for Obama just not this quick. It's degrading to the value of the prize.

  • crystal_air

This makes a lot of sense.

  • nidan

@Simbathe2nd - I've bareley had time to digest the story. No thoughts on it yet.

  • VoiceoftheSilent

It would have to be a joke if Obama could win it.

  • repressedwriter

I just posted my reasons why Obama doesn't deserve it...yet.

  • jupiter312

I've only ever been interested in the Nobel Prizes that were awarded for science, anyway...and even then, I disagree with the system in many cases.

  • secretxxkeeper

What exactly has he done yet? Hmm let me think...noth-

Oh yeah, wait a sec. He had a vision, I almost forgot. That and the fact that he's the first black president. I mean, its something to be proud of. Congrats... but despite that, if we all really don't care about race, what does him being black even matter? /sigh.

Oooh guess what! Pick me pick me! -jumps up and down waving hands in the air.-

I have a vision too. Seriously. Only my vision is, I want to actually change things for the better... instead of handing money off to criminals every opportunity I get...

Everyone has a vision.... we should all get a prize. -_-

I apologize if this rubs off on you the wrong way, but I'm ticked off that someone who has actually done something hasn't gotten it. I have no issues with him receiving it, once he has a good plan that gets put into action, that actually does something good for someone/thing other than criminial organizations. But until then... I just don't think he deserves it.

"Lets forget about political persuasions, agendas, and differences, and

I couldn't agree with you more in that sentence and paragraph.

Great post.  There are a lot of people who deserve it more than Obama; the Nobel Peace Prize seems to be just a big popularity contest.  I thought we got over that in high school?

  • mr_randyc

Well, they gave it to Obama because they don't know about me yet. lol  Well, I'm for peace, so why didn't I get nominated?  Great post!

  • one_eared_batman

@rocketopossum - The post or the fact that Obama won it?

  • rocketopossum

@one_eared_batman - Haha.  The fact that Obama won it.  I wouldn't comment if I didn't like the post.

  • youaintjam

I agreed with you until you thought Reagan deserved a Nobel Peace Prize.  The Soviets kind of defeated themselves, Reagan was just in the right place at the right time. The ball was kind of rolling already and Reagan just gave it a little extra nudge.

But yeah, I absolutely agree on Arafat, Gore, and Obama. I tend to like people who overcome hardships, or go beyond the call of duty. Obama has done nothing outside of his job description. Gore didn't really do any groundbreaking thing, he was simply a good salesman, and Arafat wasn't exactly peaceful.

I don't know much about the other nominees except Morgan Tsvangirai. And he deserved it way more than Obama.

  • daavidd

    Nobel anything is a joke.

  • raspberryjade

    couldn't have said it better.

  • explosive

The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded for fostering peace, which Obama has done. He didn't win it because he won the presidency.

  • MissPixieGlitter

i tend to pay attention for the awards in physio/med, chem, and physics. sometimes the literature ones are meritorious, but the peace award really is a joke - especially this one.

  • manilajones

Give me a fucking break.  All the Nobel Prizes are given to the people that the Nobel committee deems to be worthy.  It's their award, not yours, so stop acting like someone violated your personal values and morality.

You complaining about Obama's Nobel Peace Prize is as lame as Kanye West complaining about Taylor Swift winning an MTV Award.

  • Shy___Away

Oh brother. Since when does the Nobel Peace Prize truly affect anything? Manilajones is right, you whining about how Obama doesn't deserve this prize is as pathetic as Kanye's MTV outburst. It's not your award, it doesn't affect you, and if someone wins something, just be happy for them!

"Why wouldn't someone like Ronald Reagan"

    I stopped right there.

It is a lot different from Kayne West.

Taylor Swift actually did something. She made a music video.

    Obama has done nothing.

He does not deserve the prize for having done something when he's done nothing. He is hemorrhaging American money into foreign countries (He actually loaned money to a foreign auto company while our own domestic companies are suffering), borrowing more money from other countries and hemorrhaging our tax dollars into programs that we can't really afford, such as health care (which, in America, has always been paid by your employer)

Obama did worse than nothing. He lied to us.

He said he would renegotiate NAFTA. He did not.

He was getting Union votes because he said he was pro-union. How is outsourcing more American jobs helping the Union? How was it helping the Union to fuse Chrysler and Fiat?

The British apparently call him President Pantywaist.

He is a joke and because of this, so is this award.
