The Heroes And The Losers
The media and society in general has mangled and butchered a lot of terms and words. The definition of words like gay, cool, or love just to name a few, but the word we have abused greatly is HERO.
We have games like Guitar Hero, implying that playing a guitar makes you a hero, we make athletes into some heroes, and we try to paint anyone who has the medias eye as a hero. Ask any young person in today's society who their hero is and you'll most likely get a "Kobe Bryant" "Magic Johnson" "LeBron James" "Lil' Wayne" or some other such celebrity. Their "heroes" are people who promote everything that's wrong with society. Lil' Wayne has been to jail multiple times, sings...I mean raps, about sex, drugs, etc., and doesn't even have the decency to pull his pants up after using the restroom. Magic Johnson has AIDs and brags about how many girls he has been with. The list just goes on and on, these people that the media and young people all over have dubbed heroes are the farthest thing one could possibly be.
A true hero to me is someone who inspires people, who affects change for better, who is brave in the face of adversity, who isn't afraid to stand up for an underdog, who will fight for the rights of those who are mistreated or discriminated against. A Hero will stand for right, when no one stands with them, a hero is not afraid to die for what they believe in, and often a hero won't even realize what they are.
I have the utmost respect for our military personnel who are not afraid to fight for our freedom, the Presidents through the years who have affected our nation positively and inspired America, the missionaries and charity groups that risk their very lives to help those who are suffering in third world countries, the people like you and I who are not afraid to stand up for what we believe in, who will press on in the face of adversity, who will go on to make a difference in the world, even if they never see their impact on society in their lifetime.
Hero could be applied to many great people, but unfortunately we have resorted to labeling trashy movie stars, basketball players, and rock stars with the coveted title. We have trashed this term to mean almost nothing. I speak for the true heroes around the world, may they one day be recognized for the greatness they possess.
Who is your hero?

Bono.
oh wait, he's a rock star! guess he couldn't possibly inspire me, affect change for the better through his countless works of charity, be brave in the face of adversity, not be afraid to stand up for underdogs that he helps, and fight for the rights of the mistreated or discriminated against that he, again, helps.
oops.
@fatal_is_life - I agree all those sports players, movie stars, and rock stars can be heroes, but my point is that just BECAUSE their famous does not make them a hero, like people seem to think.
In some way, we are all heroes. We all inspire someone. We all fight for what we believe in - even if that's just mere survival. There is no objective way to define a hero.
good post. my favorite part was, "and doesn't even have the decency to pull his pants up after using the restroom" LOL :)
my heroes are my dad and Joseph from the Old Testament and Jesus.
I'm leaning to the right
The light is where I'm running
I thought I wanted life, drunk, sexed out and blunted
But all I really wanted was the One who really won it
Fought death, beat it gave His life to the public
I love it!
...Thats my Hero. plus you Dan. Cant forget that.
I hope I don't get called Racist for this... because I call Robert E Lee my hero.. and that is because the only weapon he ever carried into battle (so they say) was his sword...
Also Ronald Reagon... THe most honest man in history... (In my opinon)...
Well anyone who can play expert on Guitar Hero deserves the title Hero!! lol jk
But you are completly right, these people in the media do not deserve the title, they may be a lot of things, but "Hero" isn't one of them!
I don't use the word "hero" a lot, but one of my favorite people is Lilias Trotter. She gave up what could have been a life of fame as an artist and instead dedicated her life to Christ.
Hey, I should write a post about her. I used her as an example almost every time I gave an impromptu speech last year.
@ImUrKarma - Robert E. Lee did not condone slavery, and he was quite the gentlemen. So that's not racist.
And Ronald Reagan was amazing. He has the greatest quotations.
@BebstersBlog2 - No its not but... the fact that he was the General of the south.. I get called racist alot for that... and he did own slaves for a short time period... though they where inherited... I believe by his wifes father after he died...
My hero is my best friend
Definitely my dad.
A dear friend of mine who helped me way more than I deserved, actually... make that all of my friends, Gandhi, Stephen Hawking, Einstein, pretty much everyone who contributed a lot to science or medecine, every activist who ever took the time to stand up against descrimination... those activists include celebrities like John Lennon. Although he was a musician, he was an activist too, and I'm pretty sure he wasn't the only one.
oh and myself. I can be my own hero right?
Ps. Good post. I agree.
@ImUrKarma - Robert E Lee is one of my heros too.
Ghandi, Mother Theresa, Aaron Weiss, and Shane Claibourne. And my brother.
My dad is definitely one of my greatest heroes. Sad it's so difficult to find one these days.
